2. Dance of the Djinn 7:06

The Djinn are ancient spirit beings of Arabic tradition. They are described in the Qur’an as creatures of fire who have their own culture, language and religion. Like humans some are good and some are evil. They dwell in a realm just beyond the reach of the five human senses and may sometimes interfere in the lives of mortals. It was an ancient practice to imprison them in iron and brass bottles. This may be the origin of the stories of the Genies in the Thousand and One Nights.

In the Sufi tradition the inner journey to the true self is an unending progress toward the Heart. To the ancient

Egyptians the Heart was a most precious part of the living human. It was carried by the soul into the Afterlife and weighed against a feather to prove the soul’s worthiness to rest awhile in Paradise.

The wide-skirted, Sufi khirqah cloak is worn by a dervish dancer. It signifies the honour and devotion of a true mystic. Some people believe that the cloak is powerful enough to grant the wearer the status of saint. I don’t believe that spiritual clothing makes one spiritual. It’s not the clothes that make a saint; it’s a person’s actions and inner being

that make a saint.
